Round 3: Lakeside returns Event: FVAQ Round 3 | 12-13 June 2010 Location: Lakeside Park, Kurwongbah | AASA QRDC Series Author: Mike Russell | FVAQ Secretary 21 June 2010 | Press Release Images by: Shifting Focus | Ian Welsh | www.shiftingfocus.com.au Image Gallery: Shifting Focus | http://shiftingfocus.zenfolio.com/p971688407 ![]() Paul Kellaway D & F's Budget Cleaner Carpets and Pest Management Jabiru 1600cc. "Mike's mutterings" Most of the 20 cars entered for the weekend were out for practice on Friday, & even this early Lakeside lived up to its reputation as a very unforgiving circuit. Tim Hamilton had an altercation with the wall at 'Eastern Loop', damaging three corners of the Jacer & sending them home to cannibalize the '02 car. A huge effort resulted in Tim starting rear of grid for Race 2 on Sunday. Broderick Bosworth managed 3 laps in Mike Russell's Concept before parking in the tyre barrier at 'Carousell'. Fortunately, a slightly bent ego & H-beam the only damage. Ben Beasley tried a new aero package after leaving his nosecone at home. It might be a bit breezy though Ben! SATURDAY Everyone arrived to a superb sunny Queensland winters day. 20 cars started qualifying & once more Lakeside bit, with Mike Smith finding the same piece of wall that Tim tried to rearrange the day before. Fortunately damage was minimal & Mike made it out for the first race. Paul Kallaway was on pole with Mike Smith beside him on the front row. Luke Battaglia 3rd in the 1200 Argus heading Beasley, Doidge, & Acheson in 1600s. & 1.8 seconds faster than Kent Cross his nearest 1200 competitor. Graeme Clarke in the historic Nimbus was 10th on the grid using 3 year old tyres & carrying 50kgs excess weight. That's the car & driver not just the driver. (Sorry Graeme) RACE 1 Paul & Mike had a race long dual with Paul coming out on top. Ben Beasley & John Doige also had a race long scrap with John the victor in 3rd & 4th. Bruce Acheson had Luke tucked under his tailpipe the whole race for 5th & 6th. Kent Cross drove a lonely race for 7th. Behind him Andrew Moran, Craig Hughes & Bob Roberts had a race long battle. David Boulton came from rear of grid to finish 11th after problems in qualifying. Newcomer Ross Trevor, Graeme Clark, Ted Sibly, Clinton Leibinger, Brady Nichols & more newcomers Ben Plant & Brod Bosworth all battled out the minor placings. (& I mean battled). SUNDAY RACE 2 John Doige started a sequence of events that resulted in this race being cancelled with no points being awarded. A mechanical failure caused him to hit the wall at 'Eastern loop' in the same spot as Tim & Mike (is there a big red target there?). Fortunately John is alright except for a sore back. This brought out the caution flag, which was not seen by Craig who had a coming together with Bob, all a bit messy really. On the return to the track for the restart, Luke was aggressive with warming the tyres & put a tyre in the grass, lost control, speared across the track, hit the concrete wall, rolling the Argus. Luke was taken to hospital for observation, & released 3 hrs later with a sore neck, & a very bent car. We hope he recovers quickly & the team can start repairing the car soon. There are many FVAQ members out there who can assist, so, Luke & Ben, don't hesitate to ask. Almost all categories had red flag incidents throughout the morning, resulting in the last 2 races being reduced to 8 laps from the original 10. RACE 3 Race 3 saw a race long fight between Paul, Mike, Ben, & Bruce, with just 1.7 seconds between them at the finish. Tim came from the back of the grid to finish 5th, 10 seconds behind the front pack. Kent Cross & David Boulton fought out the 1200's with Bob Roberts just out of reach behind them. Andrew Moran, Ted Sibley & Clinten Leibinger came through the rest of the 1200's in a duel that lasted till lap 7, when Clinton made a mistake, dropping him back into the clutches of Ross Trevor, Graeme Clarke, Brady, & Ben Plant in the 1200's again. Brod Bosworth & Alan Don followed behind in their own race, with Alan shadowing Brod the whole race & improving his lap times by 3 seconds. David Naish completed the field. RACE 4 With Luke, John Doige, Craig Hughes, Brady Nichols & David Naish all out of the last race, only 15 cars made the start of the last race. This didn't affect the quality of the racing with 5 cars in the lead group. Mike, Paul, Ben & Bruce led away with Mike & Paul contesting the front spot. Tim started from 5th & with a controlled display of driving, picked off the others to lead by lap 5. He dropped back behind Paul till the last lap & took the lead over the line to take the win. Ben had his throttle stick wide open into 'Hungry' corner resulting in a wild ride. (They won't need to mow that bit of grass for a while) Kent & David Boulton again fought out the 1200's with Kent coming out on top again, with Ted Sibley (improving all weekend) splitting them in the Polar. Clinton, Andrew, Ross Trevor, Graeme Clarke & Ben Plant made up the big scrap further back. Alan Don got the best of Brod Bosworth with Bosworth spinning at 'Hungary'. SUMMARY All in all it was a very successful weekend of racing. Despite missing Saturday's race, Tim retains the lead in the Club Championship with 250 points with Paul on 224 & Mike on 214. Rookie Brady Nicholls leads the 1200s with 187 points, with Kent quickly closing on 184 and Luke on 167. Graeme Clarke leads the Invited & Historics with a massive 289 points with Alan Don 2nd with 79 & Bob Roberts in 3rd with 78. A big thanks to some of the people who helped out all weekend. Firstly to all the ladies for making the pit a more glamorous place, we love it. To Chris Roberts for distributing the time & grid sheets. Mal & Shane Hart for there assistance to many competitors during the weekend. A special thanks to Brett Curtis for his work on ensuring all things technical where correct. The technical officer's job is to help everyone to comply with the Formula vee regulations, not to beat people over the head with a big stick. So when he comes around, don't panic, he is there to help. Hope to see you all at Morgan Park in July. ![]() Luke Battaglia suffered a horrific roll-over in Race 2. ![]() John Doidge wasn't alone in hitting the Eastern Loop wall...
